Pixel Speedrun Modes, Challenges and Unlocks: Everything Past Classic
Published · 2 min read
Finishing the twenty Classic levels is only the start of Pixel Speedrun. The Play menu has six entries, the Stats screen tracks four kinds of personal best, and a Cosmetics screen holds eight locked skins, each with its own goal. Here is what every mode does and how to unlock everything.
The six entries on the Play menu
Classic. Levels 1 to 20 in order, on one timer. This is the run the Steam game's community times on speedrun.com. Your best total is saved as your Classic PB, and each level's split goes into your individual level (IL) times.
Collect. The same twenty levels with coins placed around them: five in level 1 and twenty-eight in level 20. You have to pick them all up, and suddenly the fast route through a level you know goes a completely different way.
Chaos. Classic with random events that change the rules during the run. Two Chaos runs are never quite the same. The goals are to finish it, finish in under 8 minutes, and finish with fewer than 5 deaths.
Blind. The hardest of the lot. The game's own unlock text credits a player called theepiccarrot7 as the first person to ever beat it. Learn the routes in Classic and Practice before you try.
Practice. Any single level on its own, with a small practice toolbar. Use it for learning, not for times.
Challenges. Five separate hand-made levels, numbered 1 to 5, each with its own best time on the Stats screen. Challenge 1 alone has over two hundred lava blocks.
Times and stats
The Stats screen has four columns: PB's (your best full run in Classic, Collect, Blind and Chaos), Sum of IL (your best time on each level added together, which shows the run you could get if every level went perfectly), Challenges, and lifetime Stats: jumps, double jumps and deaths. The ILs arrow opens the level-by-level table.
Unlocking the eight skins
Cosmetics starts with the plain white square and eight question marks. The goals the game checks include:
- Beat Classic, then beat it in under 5 minutes and in under 3 minutes.
- Beat Classic with fewer than 5 deaths, then with 0 deaths.
- Beat Collect, then beat it in under 10 minutes and in under 8 minutes.
- Beat Chaos, beat it in under 8 minutes, and with fewer than 5 deaths.
- Beat each of the five challenges, and all of them.
- The grinders: 10,000 deaths and 100,000 jumps in total.
A 0-death Classic run is the one most players get stuck on. Play it slowly and safely, and use your double jump as a spare rather than for speed.
The level editor
Level Editor on the main menu has three buttons. Create opens the editor. Load Local opens levels saved in your browser. Play Custom takes a share-code, so a friend can paste your level in and play it. It is the quickest way to set each other a room that looks easy and isn't.
